Black mold
Black Mold Removal in Atlanta, GA
Dark spots spreading on a wall are hard to ignore. We work out what's feeding them, seal the area off and take the growth out properly.

Few things make a homeowner call faster than black spots on a bathroom ceiling or behind a dresser. Black mold removal in Atlanta usually starts with the same question: how worried should I be, and how far does it go? Color alone doesn't tell you the species. Plenty of mold looks black, and only lab testing can say what it is. What matters for the job is how much is growing, what it's growing on and what's keeping it wet.
What you can see is often the small part. Mold on the room side of drywall usually means more on the back of it, so we check behind the surface with moisture meters and thermal imaging before anyone quotes a scope. If it's more than a light surface patch, we put up plastic containment under negative air, run HEPA air scrubbers and cut out the porous material that can't be cleaned. Full details are on our mold removal and remediation page.
Painting over it or spraying bleach only hides it for a while, because the moisture is still there. Find the source and the job stays done. If you'd like an independent test before or after we work, we're glad to have it. The moisture assessment is usually where we start.
Call us if you notice
- Black or dark green spots on drywall, grout or ceilings
- Dark patches that come back after you scrub them
- Spots along the bottom of a wall after a leak
- Black growth around a window, vent or AC closet
- Dark staining behind furniture on an outside wall
- A musty smell with spots you can see
Right now, if it's safe
- Leave it alone. Scrubbing or dry brushing puts spores into the air.
- Do not paint over it or spray bleach on it. Neither one fixes what's behind the surface.
- Turn off the HVAC if the growth is near a vent or return.
- Keep the door to that room closed.
- Take a few photos and call us for a free on-site assessment.

Real reviews from people we have helped
I had a great experience with Mitigate First. They were professional, responsive, and easy to work with throughout the process. It’s not always easy to find a company you can trust when dealing with water damage, but they made the experience much less stressful. I really appreciate their hard work and would definitely recommend them to anyone in need of their services
Called Mitigate First for a flood restoration job and they were on-site fast, walked me through exactly what needed to happen, and had the water out and the space dried properly without any surprises. Pricing was fair and clear up front — no padding, no change orders. Would use them again and already have them saved as my go-to.
Levi and his team from Mitigation did an awesome job cleaning the mold off my back porch. They even sprayed my attic for prevention of any mold for free. They were very knowledgeable and professional. I would highly recommend them to any of my business associates and family and friends.
Questions
Black Mold Removal FAQ
How do I know if it's really black mold?
You can't tell by color. Many kinds of mold look black, and only lab testing identifies the species. For cleanup, the amount of growth and the moisture behind it matter more than the name. We can arrange for testing if you want it.
How much does black mold removal cost in Atlanta?
It depends on the size of the area, the materials and whether the moisture source still needs fixing. A small patch under a sink is very different from a whole wall. The on-site assessment is free, and you get a written scope before any work begins.
Can I clean black mold myself?
A very small spot on a hard, non-porous surface can often be cleaned. Anything on drywall, anything larger, or anything that keeps coming back usually means moisture behind the surface, and that needs a closer look.
Why did the black mold come back after I cleaned it?
Because the moisture is still there. Mold grows back as long as it stays damp, whether from a slow leak, poor ventilation or humidity. We find the source so it doesn't return.
Is black mold covered by insurance?
Sometimes. Mold from a sudden, covered water loss may be included, while mold from long-term humidity usually is not, and many policies cap mold coverage. Your policy decides that. We document the job so your carrier has what it needs.
